Support for parents

We know that having premature or sick babies is often very difficult and incredibly distressing for families. Before the birth, if you find out your pregnancy is risky or your baby could end up ill, find more out about it and do all you can to prepare for this.

Prepare yourself by:

  • Asking your doctor questions (take notes)
  • Research conditions mentioned by the doctor (NHS website can be useful)
  • You could talk to someone in the same position as you or who was in the same position as you - they could give you support and advice.

Look after yourself by:

  • Eating plenty of fruit and veg
  • Starch food and carbs
  • Meat poultry and eggs for protein (cooked well)
  • Fish (two portions a week)
  • Do something active every day
  • No smoking or drinking
  • Look after your mental health
  • Stay relaxed.
